It was very effective in bringing my pain levels down and is great for getting a good nights sleep, which helps your body recover. It worked especially well in combination with acupuncture - together they work in synergy to dampen down those overactive nerves in your vulva. I had both continuous and provoked vulvodynia. I was on 20 mg for a while, which gave me no side effects. When I tried to go up to 30mg, I got a very dry mouth, felt hung over, got a rash and constipation. My vulvodynia improved, but after a smear test, came back with a vengeance, so my consultant suggested trying to increase the amitriptyline again. What worked for me was to increase it by 5mg (cut the 10mg tablet in half) every week and my body slowly adapted to it without serious side effects (only constipation at first, but that died down). I manage to get up to 50mg in that way, which was the minimum my consultant wanted me to be on, before getting any detrimental side effects (I stuck with 55 for 2 weeks, but it affected my concentration in the day). I have been on 50 mg for a while now and have no side effects - the body adapts and it becomes the norm. I still get a great nights sleep - it takes a lot to wake me from it.

It will make you very very drowsy and is a very affective sleeping pill basically.
